The doomed romance between the Irish princess Isolde and the Cornish knight Tristan, recounted by poets since the twelfth century, took on a new drama and immediacy in Wagner's treatment. The composer filled the opera with a sense of desperate longing with his blending of tonality, blurring of keys,

and innovative use of repetitive leitmotifs. His convoluted amalgam of love,death, and ***ism shattered the fundamentals of conventional harmony and ushered in a new era of thought in musical development and theory.

This edition is complete, with newly added lists of characters, credits, and con-tents-all in the original German with optional English singing text by H. & F.Corder.
